Ducal Palace A masterpiece that is truly worth visiting at least once in a lifetime: this is the Doge's Palace, a monument of rare and absolute beauty. Also known as the residence of the Doge, the main authority of the Republic of Venice from 697 to 1797, and for this reason also called Doge's Palace in ancient times. Officially becoming a museum in 1923, in its long history it has survived fires and floods, passing ownership between successive Doges. Since 1996 the Doge's Palace has become a full-fledged part of the system of the Civic Museums of Venice. The facade of the Doge's Palace, is considered a Gothic jewel; it stands in the monumental area of St. Mark's Square, one of the most fascinating places in the lagoon city, overlooking the basin of the same name. The Palace has three sides: two main ones and one on the canal that divides it from the Prisons; the fourth facade, however, is the side body of St. Mark's Basilica. The Doge's Palace hosts exhibitions of great historical interest, is open to the public and offers a wide choice of itineraries, including the "Secret Itineraries of the Doge's Palace" and "The Doge's Hidden Treasures."   On the Inside The palace is entered through the Porta del Frumento from which one ascends to the upper floor with the Loggias that run along the three wings of the palace and offer striking views of the courtyard and Piazzetta San Marco. The exterior facades present a Venetian Gothic style, with refined decorations accompanied by symbols, allegorical motifs, capitals and sculptures. Inside you can admire the Scala dei Giganti, located in the courtyard, a masterpiece of Renaissance art. Visiting the museum, you will discover the history and culture of Venetian civilization, from the origins of the first doges, to the 14th-century palace, continuing with the renovations of Doge Foscari and the 15th century, the fire of 1577, the prisons and other 17th-century interventions, until the end of the Republic of Venice. What makes the Doge's Palace even more unique are its interior structures: the Golden Staircase, the Bridge of Sighs and the Prisons, as well as works by some of the most celebrated painters in art history, such as Gentile da Fabriano, Carpaccio, Titian, Andrea Palladio, Tintoretto, Giambattista Tiepolo and Veronese. Also not to be missed are the Armory Rooms, a real spectacle for lovers of period weapons, Bridge of Sighs, which was crossed by condemned prisoners, who sighing precisely - watched from its windows, for the last time, the lagoon. Finally, the Bocca di Leone, a sort of letterbox where illegal actions of citizens could be reported anonymously. The history of the Veneto cocktail par excellence The first version of the spritz can be traced back to the early 19th century, with the custom of the troops of the Austrian Empire to dilute Veneto wines with sparkling water. This also gave rise to its name from the German verb spritzen, meaning 'to splash', the act of adding sparkling water to wine. Today's Spritz, as we know it, originated in the early post-war period when the habit of aperitifs became widespread. In fact, between the 1920s and 1930s, bitter began to be added to the Spritz mixture in the areas between Venice and Padua. It was precisely at that time that the Pilla brothers in Venice launched the custom of drinking the Spritz with soda or soda water, while in the meantime the Paduan Barbieri brothers created another bitter: Aperol. Thus the Spritz became popular first in the Veneto region and then spread throughout the peninsula to become a globally consumed cocktail. Its nationwide popularity was fostered thanks to the Aperol aperitif company, which launched a major advertising campaign in 2008. Over the years, the Spritz has continued to be the protagonist of the aperitif, a pause that has been extended in time, being served with numerous snacks, noodles or cicchetti, thus transforming into the famous Apericena.   Preparation As mentioned earlier, the Spritz is therefore an alcoholic aperitif based on Prosecco, Aperol and soda (or sparkling water) that is usually served in a wine glass. To prepare one properly, start by filling a wine glass with ice, then pour three parts Prosecco and add two parts Aperol. It is then finished off with one part soda or sparkling water and garnished with a nice slice of orange, although here in Venice you cannot miss the famous olive as the finishing touch. If you want to make a non-alcoholic spritz, use two parts orange juice and a splash of soda. Among the perfect accompaniments to enjoy while sipping our Spritz are various savoury preparations such as: canapés, especially those with smoked salmon and avocado, fresh or mature cheeses, sliced meats of all kinds, or vegetables (courgettes, carrots, celery).  

The Venice Film Festival The Venice International Film Festival is the film festival with the longest tradition, and one of the most prestigious in the world. The idea was born in 1932 by then President of the Biennale Giuseppe Volpi, together with sculptor Antonio Maraini and film critic Luciano de Feo. The Exhibition immediately garnered widespread success and popularity, becoming an annual event as early as 1935. To this day, The Venice Film Festival is considered an important film art event on an international level, highlighting some of the most successful directors and performers of our time. The red carpet of the Venice Lido embodies a perfect atmosphere between tradition and glamorous appeal, which has always distinguished this event. The main aim of the Venice Film Festival is to foster the dissemination of international cinema in all its forms of art, entertainment and industry, thus evoking a spirit of freedom and dialogue.   80th Edition  This year marks the 80th edition of the Film Festival, organized by the Venice Biennale and directed by Alberto Barbera to be held at the Venice Lido from August 30 to September 9, 2023. She will hold the role of godmother of the Venice Film Festival 2023, actress Caterina Murino. Caterina will open the Festival on the evening of Wednesday, August 30, on the stage of the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema at the Lido) during the opening ceremony and will lead the event until the last evening on September 9, when the final ceremony will take place during which the Lions and other official awards of the 80th Venice Film Festival will be announced. In addition, as every year, both the Venice Lido and the entire city will be transformed into a theater full of events and appointments for all participants and visiting tourists. From cocktail parties, parties in luxurious Venetian palaces, to other cultural gatherings (provided in the program of events on the official website), there will be no shortage of opportunities for unique experiences.   Mario Serandrei Award The Award is a tribute to Mario Serandrei, master of editing, one of the figures who contributed most to creating great Italian cinema from the 1930s onwards. Hence the special bond of the Serandrei family - owner for five generations of the historic Hotel Saturnia & International and Ca' Pisani Deco Design Hotel, both 4-star Superior structures in the heart of Venice - with the world of cinema. From this family heritage, but more generally from the attention to tradition and the link with the cultural life of the city, comes the institution, within the International Film Critics' Week, of the Mario Serandrei Award, now in its eighth year.    

Bridges in Venice   One of the elements recognised as a symbol of Venice is the 'bridge'. This lagoon city has as many as 435 of them, plus the temporary ones, called votive bridges, that are erected during the city's religious celebrations. Bridges have been built since ancient times as a means of moving between one bank and the other of the Venetian canals. Initially, they looked like real boat bridges, with wooden planks in between to allow passage. But the inhabitants of Venice came to turn a necessity into an opportunity to make their city an even greater focus of interest and beauty. Among the main bridges in Venice, we find the Accademia Bridge, only 150m from our Hotel, from where you can admire one of the most beautiful views of the Grand Canal.   The Accademia Bridge   The Accademia Bridge is the second bridge built over the Grand Canal, after the city's most famous bridge, the Rialto Bridge. It takes its name from the nearby church buildings that have since been deconsecrated, and now house the Gallerie dell'Accademia, one of Venice's main artistic centres. The Accademia Bridge connects two of the city's most important Sestieri, St Mark's on one side and Dorsoduro on the other ( hosting the Ca' Pisani Deco Design Hotel). It differs from the other bridges in Venice in that its provisional wooden construction, designed in 1933 by engineer Enrico Miozzi, remained the final version (to this day it is one of the largest arched wooden bridges in Europe). All other bridges in Venice are built of stone.   Recognised, therefore, as one of the city's main tourist attractions, whether you admire it by water or on foot, the Accademia Bridge remains a must-see where you can have your photo taken, to frame the best memories of your stay in Venice.

Eco-sustainability in Venice is always a particular challenge due to the city's characteristics; put on the back burner following the measures taken during the Covid period, our focus on plastic-free policies resumed immediately after the emergency, remaining an important aim for us. Our Hotel, to its own small way, returned to work with effective solutions against plastic waste and pollution, such as the use of glass containers for breakfast, refillable dispensers in the bathrooms, and water dispensers to fill your water bottle.   Plastic-free hotels in Venice: one of our challenges   With a city like ours aiming more and more at eco-friendly projects, the Ca' Pisani Deco Design Hotel has earned one of the top spots on Tripadvisor's sustainability ranking in Venice. We introduce them to you now, below.   Breakfast: glass containers   To start the day in the best possible way, we always start with a rich and tasty breakfast, which is greatly appreciated by our guests here at Ca' Pisani. In fact, the variety of items on offer is wide, and to limit plastic waste, most of the food is offered in glass containers (such as jam and yoghurt). This means that disposable plastic packaging is removed.   Courtesy line dispensers   Another environmentally friendly action is the courtesy line we present to our guests. We have said goodbye to the traditional disposable packaging of shampoo and soap. In exchange we offer convenient dispensers that are promptly refilled, and here we are again limiting the amount of waste produced. Furthermore, for the laundry service we ask for your cooperation: only the towels placed on the floor will be changed. This also saves us a dose of energy and reduces the use of water, today considered the most precious resource. Our staff also have refills for the various cleaning products, and we have made a selection of materials and limited the waste of several packages.   Water dispenser for a plastic-free hotel   On the third floor you will find a water dispenser (cold and room temperature), ideal for refilling your water bottle on the fly. In any case, we would like to inform you that the water from our taps is drinkable, just like the water from the city fountains. So if you are out and about and thirsty, you can consult the VeniceTapWater.com. map to find the source nearest to you. In this way you will help us, and our city, to become a more plastic free. Surely there is more that can be thought of and realised in favour of the environment, at the moment this is a good start for us, but if you have valuable advice to give us, we are open to new proposals!

The 18th International Architecture Exhibition, curated by Lesley Lokko and organized by La Biennale di Venezia, is open to the public from May 20th to November 26th 2023 at the Giardini and the Arsenale venues in Venice and at Forte Marghera (Mestre). May 18th and 19th are the pre-opening days.   Biennale Architettura 2023: The Laboratory of the Future   The Laboratory of the Future is the theme chosen by curator Lesley Lokko for the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, an exhibition focused on the concept of change, primarily climate change. In fact, La Biennale di Venezia is committed to promoting a more sustainable model for the design, installation and operation of all its events, obtaining carbon neutrality certification for all its events in 2022. Regarding this edition of the Architecture Biennale, Lesley Lokko explains: “an architecture exhibition is both a moment and a process. It borrows its structure and format from art exhibitions, but it differs from art in critical ways which often go unnoticed. Aside from the desire to tell a story, questions of production, resources and representation are central to the way an architecture exhibition comes into the world, yet are rarely acknowledged or discussed. From the outset, it was clear that the essential gesture of The Laboratory of the Future would be «change».” The 2023 Architecture Biennale is divided into six parts and more than half of the 89 participants come from Africa and the African Diaspora, with 70% of the works produced by individually run studios or made of up to five people. This edition includes 64 National Participations, among which Niger participates for the first time, while the Holy See returns to exhibit on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. A gondola ride is certainly one of the experiences on the wish list of those visiting Venice as it allows you to admire all the beauty of our city from a privileged point of view, the characteristic canals. The gondola is one of the means of transport for getting around Venice, and it is also one of the best known in the world, so much that it is featured in books, films and songs from various epochs.   The features of the Venetian gondola   Despite being about 11 meters long and weighing 600 kg, the Venetian gondola is easily maneuvered by a single gondolier with one oar. It has an asymmetrical shape, with the left side wider than the right one, and for this reason it assumes a peculiar inclination on one side while navigating. The gondola is entirely built in wood (there are eight different types) in the traditional squeri, the typical Venetian shipyards for wooden boats, and two metal elements are installed at the bow and stern, respectively the "fero" and the "risso". The "fero" (“iron” in Italian) is closely linked to the conformation of Venice; the "S" shape evokes the configuration of the Grand Canal. The six-tooth comb represents the different districts (Dorsoduro, Cannaregio, San Polo, Santa Croce, San Marco and Castello), the one facing the opposite side the island of Giudecca; the decorations called "leaves", on the other hand, recall the three major islands of the Northern Lagoon, namely Burano, Murano and Torcello. The shape of the upper part refers to the typical Doge's hat, called the ducal horn, while the curve, immediately above the six teeth, represents the Rialto Bridge. On the other hand, the "risso" is placed in the rear, which protects from impacts and is the highest point of the gondola, and, near the gondolier's position, the "forcola", a wooden rowlock typical of Venetian rowing boats. The hull of the gondola has a flat bottom, a feature that makes the boat very easy to handle and allows you to enter even the lowest canals: it is exclusively black due to the historical use of pitch as a waterproofing agent.   A gondola ride   Currently the gondola is mainly used for tourist purposes, even if there are still some gondola-ferries to cross the Grand Canal from one side to the other. You will find various gondolier stations in the strategic points of the city; one of the most photographed and crowded is certainly the Bacino Orseolo in the San Marco district. However, if you desire, you can also embark just a few steps from our hotel, near the Accademia Bridge, as well as from various other stations. The municipal administration has defined fares for the gondolas (daytime rental and ride service, from 9am to 7pm, 30 minutes - € 80.00; night ride, from 7pm to 3am, 35 minutes - € 100.00), but if you want to take longer tours, you can arrange your itinerary directly with the gondolier. The Carnival of Venice is one of the most loved events by citizens and tourists. The city comes alive with masks, colors and a rich calendar of events. But do you know what the typical masks of Venice are? Some have ancient origins such as the Bàuta, the Moreta, the Gnaga and the "plague doctor". Others are connected to the characters of the commedia dell'arte - the most famous are Arlecchino, Colombina and Pantalone. In the following paragraph you will be able to discover some of its characteristic features   The typical Venetian masks   The most well-known typical Venetian costume is the Bàuta. The mask, defined as larva, is traditionally white and simple. The lower lip is deformed and open underneath allowing one to eat and drink, without removing it. It therefore guaranteed complete anonymity and was used by both men and women. Sometimes it was accompanied by a tricorn, an ancient Venetian hat with three points, and a long black cloak. The Moreta is instead the female mask par excellence. Oval and black in color, it is characterized by having to be supported by holding a button between the lips. Always with feminine features but worn by homosexual men, the Gnaga is a cat-shaped mask, sometimes completed by a kitten in one's arms or in a basket. "Gnaga" derives in fact from the Venetian dialect "gniao" which means "meow". Long beak, glasses, a black tunic identify the "plague doctor", whose origins date back to the numerous plagues that the city has had to face over the centuries. Very often the disguise is completed with a wooden stick, an instrument which allows the doctor to assess the state of the sick without touching them. These traditional masks are then joined by characters from the commedia dell'arte -  the most famous are  Arlecchino, Colombina and the old merchant Pantalone. In all the handicraft shops the masks of the "mattacino" are also displayed, - a sort of clown who used to throw eggs filled with perfume - and of the "face" - with the face decorated in various ways, with glitter, beads , feathers and more. The face is usually combined with the typical clothes of very elaborate Venetian nobles.   The mascareri of Venice   The mascareri are the Venetian artisans who produce the masks. The tradition is handed down from generation to generation and there are still shops in the city that practice this ancient craft. In the Dorsoduro district, not far from our hotel, you will find Ca' Macana, but there are other shops in different areas of the city and in particular we point out La Bauta and Atelier Marega in San Polo and Ca' del Sol in Castello. Many offer the possibility of participating in workshops to create and customize your own mask, as well as being able to rent carnival clothes. Futurism, the Italian art movement of the early twentieth century, often had a playful aspect, in which games were seen as an aesthetic activity, a sort of optimistic “refounding” of art. It was certainly a utopia, but this exercise allowed Futurists to reflect and practice in the most disparate fields, such as cooking. The futurist ‘polibibite’ were born in a period of autocracy and strong nationalism, in contrast especially with American cocktails , by using only Italian products. Our 2023 calendar, decades of tradition of the Serandrei family that began in 1981, presents the aperitifs invented and proposed by the Futurist movement (some are educated guesses and drinkable, others are merely provocative inventions) that have been interpreted in the graphic style of that time, by Studio Tapiro of Venice. They represent the desire of futurism to bring art into daily life by investing in many different areas such as toys, clothing, advertising, scenic sketches and tapestries, in a provocative and playful way to continuously rebuild the universe, and cheering it up. You can read the recipes below: have fun replicating them at home or come and taste some of them at our Ristorante La Rivista.   Futurist Cocktails: the recipes   REGENERATOR • 1 egg yolk • 1/2 glass of Asti spumante • 3 toasted walnuts • 3 teaspoons of sugar Everything beaten for 10 minutes. Presented in a glass with a peeled and protruding banana inside. SIMULTANEOUS • 4/8 Vernaccia wine • 3/8 vermouth • 1/8 brandy Unripe date stuffed with mascarpone mixed with Aurum liqueur (Pescara). The date thus packaged is wrapped in thin slices of raw ham and then in a lettuce leaf. All stuffed into a toothpick on which a small pickled red chili pepper stuffed with chopped Parmesan cheese will also be inserted. (If you put the toothpick in the glass, the eyes of the fat deposited by the ham will appear on the liquid: in this case the Futurist cocktail may be entitled ‘that pig that makes a wink’). SENATE OF DIGESTION Four diners will order two meals or digestive drinks each. Or eight diners, one of them each. The other guests will secretly vote against one or the other. The winner will be the one with the fewest unfavorable votes. WHITE ROSE Different doses of orange, Campari liqueur and anise with essence of White Roses. CAFFÈMANNA Roasted barley coffee, sweetened with manna. Serve it very hot so that each diner can cool it by whistling inside the most freezing jokes. MILK IN THE GREEN LIGHT In a large bowl of cold milk put a few teaspoons of honey, many black grapes and some red radishes. Eat it while a green special light illuminates the bowl. Simultaneously drink a Futurist cocktail made of mineral water, beer and blackberry juice. PLUSMINUSMULTIPLIEDDIVIDED • 1 candied chestnut • 1 part tea liqueur • 1 part pineapple liqueur • 1 part thyme or wild thyme liqueur LIKE A CLOUD A large mass of whipped cream covered with orange sauce, mint, strawberry jam and sprinkled with Asti spumante. JUMP IN MEAT • 3 coffee beans • 1 part liqueur made with the following plants: coca, cola, damiana, muira puama, ioimbre, ginseng, echinacea • 1 part tea liqueur • 1 part kirsch ALCOHOL CAROUSEL • 2/4 of Barbera wine • 1/4 of cedar • 1/4 of Campari bitter A square of cheese and a square of chocolate, stuck on a toothpick, are dipped into the liquid. ALPINE LOVE • 1/4 lemon balm liqueur • 1/4 fir buds • 1/4 bananas • 1/4 fragrant woodruff THE GREAT WATERS • 1/4 of grappa • 1/4 of gin • 1/4 of anise Above the liquid floats a block of anchovy paste pharmaceutically wrapped in a host. INVENTINA Cocktail by the Futurist Aeropoet Marinetti. • 1/3 Asti spumante • 1/3 pineapple liqueur • 1/3 chilled orange juice FOG CUTTER • 1/3 sagebrush liqueur • 1/3 rhubarb liqueur • 1/3 grappa MANLADYMIDNIGHT On a round plate pour some red zabaglione to form a large stain.In the middle of this put a disk of onion with holes, crossed by a stalk of candied angelica. Add two candied chestnuts as indicated in the drawing, and serve it in 1 dish for each couple. SPARK • 1/4 hull liqueur • 1/4 gentian • 1/4 absinthe • 1/4 juniper DEVIL IN BLACK TONIC • 2/4 of orange juice • 1/4 of grappa • 1/4 of liquid chocolate Dip the yolk of a hard-boiled egg. DECISION • 1/4 of Chinato wine • 1/4 of Rhum • 1/4 of boiling Barolo wine • 1/4 of tangerine juice CARAMELLINO • Prosecco wine • tonic water • Aperol • passion fruit liqueur BURNINMOUTH At the bottom of the glass: whiskey with black cherries in spirit, previously dipped in cayenne pepper. Above: buttermilk or honey (1 cm thick) as a waterproof division. On the honey: Alkermes, Vermouth and Strega. LA RIVISTA • vodka • passion fruit liqueur • passion fruit puree • lime • brown sugar • mint UPRIGHT A hollow cylinder of ice covered on the outside with honey. Inside and at the bottom: cream ice cream, then Chivasso peanuts, pieces of pineapple, all washed down with vermouth and glacial mint. NONSENSE On an aluminum small plate, equidistant: a pile of toasted almonds, banana slices, anchovies, toasted coffee, slices of tomato and Parmesan cheese. In the center of the plate, a glass containing: vermouth, cognac, Strega. Inside: banana slices. The historic center of Venice is located on an island. Precisely because of this, people move mainly on foot or by water, with vaporetto (water bus), water taxis or with the charming gondolas.   Venice Public transport: the vaporetto   The vaporetto (water bus) is the means of public transport in the historic center of Venice, managed by the local transport company ACTV/AVM. The water buses allow you to reach the main tourist attractions and above all, places of particular interest for residents and are obviously essential for connections with the islands. Some lines travel along the Grand Canal, also offering an opportunity for a characteristic "panoramic tour". The vaporetto runs are scheduled both during the day and at night to allow those who live there and those who visit it to move freely, even if the frequency of boats decreases during the night. To access public transport in Venice, it is necessary to have the appropriate ticket, which can be purchased at the authorized resellers or online, by downloading the official app. Booklets or cumulative tickets for several days, which are ideal for moving around with greater freedom, are also available (https://actv.avmspa.it/en). The route to and from Venice's Marco Polo airport is instead served by Alilaguna (https://www.alilaguna.it/en) on yellow boats (some of which are very similar to vaporettos). To get on board it is necessary to have a specific ticket different from the ACTV/AVM one.   Gondola in Venice   The gondola is one of the symbols of our city; with sinuous lines and an asymmetrical shape, it is one of the typical boats of the Venice lagoon, certainly the most famous and replicated all over the world. It is currently mainly used for tourist purposes, but there are still gondola-ferries (traghetto) that allow you to cross the Grand Canal from one bank to the other quickly at an affordable cost. The landing places are present at Punta della Dogana, Santa Maria del Giglio, San Tomà, Riva del Carbon, Santa Sofia. In Piazzale Roma there is a paid bicycle parking, BiciPark Venezia, where you can park your vehicle. Riding a bike is instead possible on the islands of Lido di Venezia and Pellestrina, which can be reached by ferry-boat from Tronchetto Island or from Fusina (Marghera). The cicchetti, or in Venetian dialect cicheti, are appetizers generally composed of a piece of bread, on which cold cuts, vegetables, or fish are placed. They summarize the typical Venetian quick meal paired with a glass of wine, the true essence of conviviality.   Cicchetti, ombre, bacari: the Venetian socializing   The origin of the term cicchetto is unclear. Some sources link it to the Latin word ciccus, literally the membrane that covers the pomegranate grains and which figuratively means small quantity, others bring it closer to the French chiqueter, meaning “to chop”. In everyday life, what we mean here in Venice by "cicheti" identifies just "tastings", small appetizers, a sort of local "finger food" that matches with the ombra de vin, the spritz or the aperitif which to us means a real moment of socializing. According to tradition, the cicchetto is paired to the "ombra de vin", a glass of wine, a way of saying that derives from the custom of the Venetian merchants to place the wine cool under the shadow of the Saint Mark’s bell tower. Venetian cicchetti are usually offered in bacari, the typical small local taverns with few seats, where we usually eat by standing at the counter.   The Venetian cichetti to taste   In Venice the aperitif moment is experienced as an opportunity to meet friends and acquaintances. Happy hour sometimes extends over time and ends with lunch or dinner with cicheti. Each restaurant offers different recipes, but here we point out some very common and definitely worth tasting: creamed cod, sardines in saor, polenta and sopressa, cuttlefish, folpetti, schie and others, instead, with vegetables, such as cichetti with the famous and tasty artichokes from the Sant'Erasmo island, mozzarella in carrozza and fried zucchini flowers. You will also find fountains with drinking water (map available on www.venicetapwater.com) but the humidity is very high and in summer the temperatures are quite hot, so it is always useful to have water and containers to keep your four-legged friends in good health. You can also travel on the vaporetti with your dog, as long as he/she is kept on a leash or in your arms and fitted with a muzzle. Cats or other animals are allowed on public transport for free in the pet carriers, if they are small in size. The Redentore Festivity is one of the Venetians’favorite events and takes place on the Saturday before the third Sunday of July. The main appointments of the festival are the procession to the Church of the Redentore, facilitated by a bridge made of floating boats, and the extraordinary fireworks display over the water in the San Marco Basin that lights up the Venetian sky.   The origins of the Redentore Festivity This local festival commemorates the end of a terrible plague that struck the city between 1575 and 1577, and as a sign of devotion the famous Redentore Church, designed by Andrea Palladio, was built on the island of Giudecca. Every year Venetians make a pilgrimage to the Redentore church, walking across the Giudecca Canal on a bridge made of floating boats, which connects the Zattere to the Giudecca island.   The Redentore festivity for Venetians As anticipated, Venetians are particularly fond of the Redentore Festivity: every year they spend the evening together while waiting for the fireworks display. The lucky ones moor their boats adorned with lanterns or balloons directly in the San Marco Basin, while others settle along the banks, where tables are arranged from early morning (access to the San Marco basin by boat and to the banks on foot is limited and upon reservation only). Among the typical dishes, they usually eat the sardines in saor, the bigoi in salsa and the unmissable bovoeti, small earthen snails that are boiled and seasoned with garlic, oil and parsley. Another must is watermelon, a sweet and refreshing fruit that cannot be missed on the laid tables of those who follow tradition. Some of these specialties are also included in the menu of our La Rivista Restaurant and on Saturday for the Redentore dinner the Chef will add some off-menu proposals to celebrate the Venetian spirit. The fireworks display usually starts at 11:30 pm and enchants the whole city with its play of lights and colors, making the Venetian “skyline” even more amazing. Dorsoduro is the Sestiere (district) of Venice dedicated to art: some of the most important museums and collections in the city are located here. It is no coincidence that the Dorsoduro Museum Mile, a cultural journey that spans eight centuries of art, from the masterpieces of Middle Ages and Renaissance Venetian painting to the protagonists of the contemporary art scene, has been created. Four museums located between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal are included: Accademia Galleries, Palazzo Cini, Collezione Peggy Guggenheim and Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana. The exhibition itinerary winds between the first floor, where works from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century are exhibited, and the ground floor, with works from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Among the masterpieces that can be admired are Giorgione's La Tempesta (1507-1508), Madonna with Child between Saints Catherine and Mary Magdalene by Giovanni Bellini (1490), the Cycle of Stories of Sant'Orsola by Vittore Carpaccio (1490-1495 ), Boarding school at Casa Levi by Paolo Caliari known as Veronese (1572-1573). Among the drawings in the collection there is also the famous "Vitruvian Man" by Leonardo Da Vinci, the study of human proportions with an ideal figure in two different positions, with legs apart and joined, inscribed within the absolute shapes of the circle and square. During the year, the Accademia Galleries also host temporary exhibitions ranging from insights into some of the masters’ works in the permanent collections to collective and retrospective on contemporary artists. A reflection on climate change and social distancing through paintings and sculptural installations made with recycled materials embellished with gold leaf and Murano glass   Oak wood discarded after the making of a forcola (the typical support of Venetian rowing boats), maps of islands about to be submerged, pieces of recovered Murano glass are the materials that the artist Andreas Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos has chosen in order to tackle such delicate and current issues, as climate change and the social distance caused by the pandemic. The series of paintings and sculptural installations were created by the artist between Venice and London. The surfaces are painted with colours that recall water reflections and then embellished with gold leaf. The title of the exhibition recalls the sense of emptiness and distance that separated us during the pandemic, which in Venice became filled by water. This thus becomes a means of union and dialogue and once again recalls the primary element that characterises the Venetian capital and on which the effects of climate change have an even greater impact. In the paintings, a way out is proposed by the staircases, meant to be a sign of contained optimism for the future. The Biennale Arte is the most important exhibition dedicated to contemporary art that takes place in town. ostponed due to the pandemic, this year the appointment with the 59th International Art Exhibition finally returns from April 23rd to November 27th 2022 (pre-opening April 20th, 21st and 22nd).   Venice Biennale since 1895   The first International Art Exhibition in Venice was organized in 1895: since then every two years (from this derives the term "biennial") the Venetian capital hosts for about seven months the works of artists from all over the world. The first building that hosted the exhibition was the current Central Pavilion at the Giardini in the Castello district, still home to the main exhibition of the event. The Venice Biennale has always been considered an international showcase for new trends in contemporary art and an unmissable event for professionals.   Biennale Arte 2022: The milk of dreams   From April 23rd to November 27th Venice hosts the 59th edition of the international art exhibition, curated for the first time by a woman, Cecilia Alemani. The theme "The milk of dreams" comes from the title of a children's book created by the surrealist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) which tells of a magical world in constant transformation. «This exhibition» - as Cecilia Alemani stated - «is grounded in many conversations with artists held in the last few years: the questions that kept emerging from these dialogues seem to capture this moment in history when the very survival of the species is threatened, but also to sum up many other inquiries that pervade the sciences, arts, and myths of our time. How is the definition of the human changing? What constitutes life, and what differentiates plant and animal, human and non-human? What are our responsibilities towards the planet, other people, and other life forms? And what would life look like without us? These are some of the guiding questions for this edition of the Biennale Arte, which focuses on three thematic areas in particular: “the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses”; “the relationship between individuals and technologies”; “the connection between bodies and the Earth”.» 213 artists from 58 countries, 180 of these are participating for the first time, 1.433 are the works and objects on display, and 80 new projects. Starting from April 1st 2022, the green pass is not required to stay at the hotel; in fact, as the general situation is improving, the Italian government has finally decided to loosen some anti-covid restrictions.   Safe stay Starting from April 1st, guests can stay at the hotel without presenting the Green Pass, but we still want to guarantee a stay in total safety. After the exhibition “Il '900 Ritrovato” in 2019, the Ca' Pisani Design Hotel is renewing its collaboration with the dealer, antiquarian and expert connoisseur of the twentieth century, the Bolognese Maurizio Marzadori (already known for his private collection of children's furniture and vintage toys) and presenting for the first time to the public a significant corpus of furnishings and accessories: the result of over thirty years of work and research on Italian Rationalist furniture. Today this material is at the centre of the exhibition curated by Valerio Borgonuovo and by Marzadori himself. Italian Rationalism originated in 1928 with the founding of the Italian Movement for Rational Architecture (MIAR) by a new generation of architects from the Milan Polytechnic and in the span of twenty years it expressed all the conflicting views towards new Modernist Architecture which resulted in a questioning of the absolute value of those models, while at the same time by adapting them to a local and national style. On this premise, the movement operated a lot on a theoretical level, also and above all through the numerous sector magazines born in those years: Rassegna Italiana, La Casa Bella (later renamed Casabella with Giuseppe Pagano as director), Domus founded in 1928 by Giò Ponti, Quadrante and Edilizia Moderna; as well as on an operative level with works in architecture and furniture. The movement’s relationship with Fascism is ambivalent, controversial and at last irreconcilable (but for all that, undeniably productive) and thus with the architectural representation of a new society founded on that ideology. The entry into an autarchic regime around 1936, not only made inevitable but rather accelerated the process of participation of new designers in the identification of new techniques, materials (and respective applications) such as reinforced concrete, linoleum, stratified, solid and curved wood, steel pipes and profiles, light alloys, straw, rope, etc. A process that generated extraordinary combinations between designer and producer thanks also to the contribution of enlightened companies such as A. L. Colombo - Mobili Razionali Columbus, Cova, Maggioni, Olivetti, Palini, Antonio Parma and Figli (Pas), Pino, Rima, Valabrega, and others again, whose contribution in those years in defining the figure of the architect-interior designer will be fundamental. Figini and Pollini, Mucchi, Nizzoli, Pagano, Palanti, Ponti, Rambaldi, and Terragni are only some of the authors of the over sixty works selected among the main protagonists of that experience, alternating with authors of works of equal quality but still in the identification phase, within that suggestive vertical transatlantic of the early twentieth century that is precisely today the Hotel Ca' Pisani, a real Art Deco gem enclosed within the late fourteenth-century walls of its historic building. To those works a selection of office objects, knick-knacks, and toys (already part of the private collection of children's furniture and vintage toys of Maurizio Marzadori) added, which, in decreeing their rank of their true style, make this rare retrospective on Italian Rationalism an even more unique opportunity to get to know an extraordinary collection like this with the firm Freak Andò by Maurizio Marzadori in Bologna, now for the first time on display. At the same time, this exhibition also gives the opportunity to deepen a page in the history of Italian furniture which, more than a century after its writing, proves capable of still offering ample scope for research and surprise. The Venice Carnival is one of most appreciated traditional events in the world. Every year Venetians and tourists flock to the historic center to participate in the unmissable appointments of the official program (for more information visit the website www.carnevale.venezia.it). From the day after the Epiphany, the shop windows of pastry shops and bakeries showcase frittelle and galani (or chat). The Venetian frittelle are characterized by a soft dough with the addition of raisins, but you can also try those stuffed with cream, zabaglione, chocolate, pistachio and more: now every pastry chef indulges in offering his customers creative variations.   Venetian Frittelle: the recipe   Frittelle is a Carnival dessert that can be easily replicated even at home. This is why we asked the chef of the La Caravella Restaurant, one of the historical and most picturesque places in Venice owned by the Serandrei family in the San Marco district, for help and he revealed the procedures to follow step by step. Have fun and have a good Carnival!   Ingredients   500 gr 0 flour for cakes 75 gr granulated sugar 100 gr sultanas 50 gr pine nuts 50 gr candied citrons 2 eggs 20 ml grappa 30 gr brewer's yeast Vanilla sugar to taste 1 lemon (zest only) 1 orange (zest only) 150 ml of water Salt to taste Frying oil (peanuts)   Method   Pour the flour into a bowl, the granulated sugar and the diluted yeast in the center of a glass of warm water, start kneading by adding the eggs and the rest of the water until you get a tender mixture. The raisins should be soaked to hydrate in the grappa and then combined with all the rest of the ingredients (the pine nuts should be slightly crumbled) work well for 15 minutes. Then let the dough rest for two to three hours. Bring the oil to 160 °C and with a spoon shape like walnuts fry until it becomes golden brown. With a skimmer bring the frittelle and put on absorbent paper and then sprinkle the Vanilla icing sugar.

The situation in Italy regarding Covid infections and hospitalizations is improving and finally from 11 February it is no longer necessary to wear a mask outdoors. The toponymy (place names) of Venice is fascinating and revealing long-standing stories; as you know, here there are no vie (streets) except for Via Garibaldi and Via XXII Marzo where the hotel Saturnia & International is located - also owned by the Serandrei family - and squares, but calli, campi, campielli, fondamenta, rive, rii, rami, ponti, sotoporteghi and sestieri. Their name is often linked to the daily life of the past, to commercial activities developed in the area, to popular customs or historical events.   Nizioleti Another peculiarity of Venice is that you will not find road signs because the directions are painted directly on the buildings, the so-called nizioleti (literally sheets): a white box where the texts are written in black, which is reminiscent of the sheet from which it takes its name. In recent times, in some strategic places, signs on a yellow background with arrows have been added to show the way to the most popular tourist attractions.   The toponymy of Venice: some examples We have collected some of the funniest nomenclature and for each you will find the origin of the name. You can consult the map in the gallery below to place them geographically. 1. CALLE DEL CAFETIER It takes its name from a coffee shop frequented in the last years of the Republic by various noblemen. 2. CALLE DEL FRUTARIOL Its name derives from the shop of a Frutariol (fruit seller) that was located in this calle in 1740. 3. CORTE DE LE ANCORE The name comes from a blacksmith who had his workshop here and was mainly involved in the construction of anchors for Venetian boats. 4. CALLE DE L’ANGELO This street takes its name from the tavern with the Angel sign that was once located here. 5. CALLE DE LE BALANZE So called because the scales were manufactured here. 6. RIVA DEL CARBON Shore used for the sale of coal. There were 25 charcoal burners as the Republic had sold them the right to bring coal. 7. CALLE DELLA VIGNA The name derives from a vineyard that grew in the district of San Pietro di Castello, once belonging to the patriarchy. 8. CALLE DE LA NAVE The name derives from a casseller (box maker) workshop with the sign of the ship. 9. CALLE DE LE CARROZZE Although there were no carriages in Venice, they were made for the mainland. There is an engraving by Michele Marieschi with a carriage under construction in Campo dei Frari. 10. RAMO DEL FIGO Some streets in Venice got their name from nearby trees or plants. 11. CALLE DE L’OCA The street takes its name from a shop of a Frutariol (fruit seller) with the same sign. 12. CORTE CANDELE It seems that in this courtyard, subject to the parish of the SS Apostoli, there was a candle factory. 13. RAMO FIORI Its name comes from a flower shop. The Florists association, established in 1715, had 17 shops. In the Venetian Republic there was great use of fresh flowers, especially during weddings. 14. CALLE PAGLIA It acquired its name not from the straw that was used for the mussette, the donkeys ridden by nobles, but from the boats loaded with straw that used to station in the calle. 15. FONDAMENTA DE LE TETTE The harlots’ houses seemed to reach this fondamenta at that time. These ladies used to stand on the balcony with their tete (breasts) uncovered to gladden passers-by. 16. CAMPO DE LA LANA The campo housed the homes of various wool workers and the hospice for German woolen cloth weavers. Considered a key activity, the Republic worked for the development of the art of wool in Venice and some factories reached, in fact, a moderate success in the sixteenth century. 17. CAMPIELLO DEI MELONI Sellers of melons would have given the name to this place. 18. CAMPIELLO DEL LIBRER In this location there was a bookseller and stationer shop in 1761. 19. CALLE DEL CAMPANILE Its name comes from the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria Zobenigo, which was demolished in 1773 by decree of the Senate as it was unsafe. 20. CAMPIELLO MOSCA In this small square the so-called mosche (moles) were made. They were pieces of black rubberized taffeta which the ladies used to place on the face to enhance their complexion. 21. PONTE DE L’UMILTÀ The church and monastery of Santa Maria dell’Umiltà once belonged to the Teutonic knights. 22. SOTOPORTEGO DEL CASIN From the so-called casin dei nobili. The Casini were small houses where it was customary to spend the night hours with gambling or other entertainment. 23. PONTE DEL FORMAGER So named because there was a cheese seller at the beginning of the street. 24. CALLE DEL PESCE There were thousands of fishermen towards the end of the Venetian Republic. The street owes its name to a fish market that existed in this place The Venetian toponymy was chosen as the theme for the 2022 calendar created by Studio Tapiro for the Serandrei family, a tradition that has been renewed year after year since 1981. On November 21st Venetians celebrate the Feast of the Madonna della Salute The Feast of the Madonna della Salute is one of the traditional Venetian festivities and is celebrated every year on November 21st. It commemorates the thanks of the entire city to the Madonna for the end of a terrible plague that struck Venice between 1630 and 1631, an epidemic also described by Alessandro Manzoni in its Promessi Sposi book. Having no weapons to defeat her, the Doge and the Patriarch asked for divine help, organizing a procession of prayers to the Madonna for three consecutive days and nights and vowing to erect a votive temple if the city had survived. Luckily, in November 1631 the epidemic subsided: the promises were followed by setting up an annual thanksgiving procession and building the famous Basilica della Salute in the territory of the Dogana da Mar.   The votive bridge of the Madonna della Salute   Every year Venetians usually go to the Madonna della Salute church to pay homage and pray. To facilitate the pilgrimage, a temporary bridge on boats is set up between Santa Maria del Giglio and Punta della Dogana, joining the Sestiere di San Marco with that of Dorsoduro respectively. The bridge remains open for a few days to facilitate the flow of the faithful.   Tradition and cuisine: the castradina   The Basilica della Salute on the occasion of this holiday extends its opening hours. In the square there are stands where you can buy candles to pay homage to the Madonna, as well as sweets, balloons and games for children. Tradition also says that a typical dish is tasted in homage to the Dalmatians, who during the period of isolation due to the great plague were the only ones to supply the city with food: the "Castradina", a tasty soup made from salted, smoked and then seasoned mutton leg with cabbage and onions.

The Regata Storica (Historical Regatta) is one of the favorite events of Venetians and is the main appointment of the local rowing competitions. It is scheduled every year on the first Sunday of September and attracts residents and tourists to the historic center. The program includes a splendid water parade with typical boats and figures in costume, which is followed by various competitions along the Grand Canal (for the occasion it is closed to water traffic). The historical regatta has very ancient origins. The first visual image of the event is present in the "Plan of Venice" (1500) by Jacopo de' Barbari, but the first written records date back to the thirteenth century, linked in some way to the Festa delle Marie (The feast of the Marys). Since then many painters have chosen the regatta as the subject of their works, including the famous Canaletto.   Water parade The most spectacular part of the event is the historical parade. The "Bissona Serenissima" and other typical Venetian boats parade along the Grand Canal with figures in costume, including the Doge, the Dogaressa and all the highest offices of the Venetian Republic, re-evoking the glorious past of Venice.   The competitions At the end of the historical parade, the Venetian rowing competitions begin: first those reserved for children, then the others follow one another, to end with twin-oared mascarete and gondolini led by the best Venetian rowers who have handed down this passion for generations. The Gondolino, in particular, was built exclusively for the historical regatta and was used for the first time in 1825; thanks to its lightness it makes competitions more exciting and faster.

Summer is inevitably associated with sun, sea, beach ... If you think that this is not possible in a city of art, reality is different: in 20 minutes by vaporetto boat from the Zattere pier near our hotel) you can reach Lido di Venezia, an island with beautiful beaches, as well as home to the renowned Venice Film Festival, the longest-running film festival in the world which was first held in 1932. About 12 kilometers long, Lido di Venezia is bathed by the lagoon on one side and by the Adriatic Sea on the other, and bordered by the lighthouses of San Nicolò (towards Punta Sabbioni) and of Alberoni (towards the island of Pellestrina). In the north of the island there is also a small tourist airport, Nicelli, the oldest commercial airport in Italy, inaugurated in 1935 and among the ten most beautiful airports in the world according to a ranking drawn up by the BBC in 2014 by Jonathan Glancey.   Lido di Venezia: the beach of the Venetians   Lido is also the beach of the Venetians. When the warm season approaches, the residents of the island and the historic center organize themselves by renting the "capanne" (huts): large cabins with veranda and awning, very often shared by various families to amortize seasonal costs. This is how the fine golden sand dunes come alive during the hottest months of the year and become also a destination for commuters who take advantage of the various bathing establishments to rent umbrellas and deck chairs or to enjoy the free beach. The center of the island is full of Art Nouveau buildings and green areas: a walk along the main street, called Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta, which can be accessed from the vaporetto stop, is a must - a large tree-lined street that crosses perpendicularly the strip of land connecting the lagoon to the sea, and which is home to many shops, restaurants and bars.   Cycling in Venice with taste   Unlike the historic center, cars and bicycles can circulate through the Lido di Venezia. Indeed, an itinerary that we suggest you to try at least once in your life is to cycle to discover this Venetian island: rent a bicycle and head from Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta to Alberoni, a flat itinerary of about 10 km. The more trained can then get on the ferry boat and continue to the contiguous island of Pellestrina. Do not forget to enrich your excursion with tasty gastronomic stops: a mixed fried fish caught in the ancient village of Malamocco, a drink overlooking the lagoon at Alberoni or an aperitif at sunset at Murazzi, perhaps accompanied by some local “cicheti” (typical Venetian appetizer), or even one snack or sandwich filled with local ingredients at the characteristic red double-decker bus parked on the seafront during the summer season; and for those who visit Pellestrina a dish with the typical Mitilla mussels. Today, get a look at Venice from another perspective. You, like us, will surely have been fascinated by its canals, calli and bridges, by the gondolas that make the Venetian capital a unique city in the world. But have you ever set your eyes towards the sky admiring the characteristic Venetian skyline and have you ever wondered what those strange wooden buildings built right above the tiles are? These are the roof terraces, typical panoramic terraces in Venice, protagonists of the Venetian evenings during the summer, mostly decorated with curtains to protect from the sun and colored with flowers and plants. The roof terraces, which are usually accessed through a dormer window, were built by the Venetians to get an outdoor space: a luxury that few can afford given the proximity between the buildings and the scarcity of gardens in our city. Their origin is so ancient, that even Carlo Goldoni mentions them in the comedy "La putta onorata" (1748): “Oh caro sto sol! Co lo godo! Sia benedetta st’altana!” (oh my dear sun! How I enjoy it! The first major artistic event of 2021 takes place from May 22nd to November 21st: the 17th International Architecture Exhibition. "How will we live together?" is the theme chosen by the curator Hashim Sarkis: “The 2021 Biennale is motivated by new kinds of problems that the world is putting in front of architecture, but it is also inspired by the emerging activism of young architects and the radical revisions being proposed by the profession of architecture to take on these challenges. We need a new spatial contract. In the context of widening political divides and growing economic inequalities. We call on architects to imagine spaces in which we can generously live together.” Sarkis encourages architects to include in their research other related professions, such as artists, builders, and craftspeople, as well as politicians, journalists, social scientists, and everyday citizens. The 112 participants from 46 countries try to respond to the new issues that architecture has to face: the role of public space in recent urban riots, new reconstruction methods, new challenges that climate change is putting in front of architecture, the changing forms of collective housing across the globe, the architecture of education, the education of the architect and to explore the relationship between curator and architecture. The exhibition itinerary includes two main locations: the Central Pavilion at the Giardini and the Arsenale. A section dedicated to the theme "How will we play together?" with the works of five architects and an architectural photographer is proposed on the mainland at the Forte Marghera - Mestre. Since Easter is approaching our desire for "fugassa", the traditional Venetian focaccia, is growing day by day. Also, because we love craft shops, today we are going to take you to discover of one of the oldest and best known Venetian pastry shops: Dal Nono Colussi. It is only 7 minutes from Ca 'Pisani: you will have to head to Campo San Barnaba along the Rio de la Toletta, which in the months of March and April offers a small show, with a mimosa plant that emerges from a private garden showing itself in all its beauty. Continuing on Calle Lunga San Barnaba you will come across the window of Dal Nono Colussi's shop.   Fugassa, the traditional Venetian focaccia   The origin of the Venetian focaccia is confused in legend. There are those who say it was a baker from Treviso who invented it first, while others trace its birth back to the local popular tradition, connected to Christian holidays, where people allowed themselves the luxury of using sugar, an ingredient that was still very expensive at the time. For this reason, it is reserved for important occasions such as Easter. Another legend is that it was the "official" sweet for engagements, given to the family of the girl chosen as a bride with the ring hidden inside. In all cases, however, the recipe for Venetian focaccia is a bread recipe with added butter, eggs, sugar and other spices (depending on who produces it) and a good dose of patience, since the procedure requires a long rising time. Today it can be found in Venetian pastry shops and bakeries especially during the Christmas and Easter periods, but there are those like Dal Nono Colussi who offer it all year round.   Dal Nono Colussi, Venetian pastry shop since 1956   One of the many craft shops in the Dorsoduro District is Dal Nono Colussi pastry shop, famous above all for the production of delicious "fugasse venexiane", now available all year round. Founded in 1956 by Franco Colussi, known by all as Nono (a term that in Venetian dialect means grandfather), the shop first offered only traditional Venetian recipes and sweets of the time, and subsequently expanded its assortment to satisfy the tastes of customers who, in any case seem to prefer traditional sweets. It is now managed by the granddaughter who has decided to continue the family business with commitment and passion. The fugassa is the dessert that has received the most awards, a sweet, soft focaccia, without candied fruit, raisins or almonds,naturally leavened with sourdough starter, as tradition dictates, a tradition with which Nono Colussi has been producing these delights for more than 60 years. “For us, art is inseparable from life ". These are the words of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, founder of the Futurist movement, which greet visitors to our website and this is the experience we want our guests to live when they choose to stay with us. The "life" at our hotel is steeped in art, taking our guests on an aesthetic journey through works of the twentieth century, which are located not only in the common areas, but also in the individual rooms. The rooms, although each one is different from the other, are artistic treasures that contain artifacts from the twentieth century: some originals expertly collected, and others faithful contemporary reproductions. At the end of 2019 they were further supplemented by the exhibition of common objects of the twentieth century from the Marzadori Collection, which were presented to the public in the exhibition "Ca' Pisani: il ‘900 ritrovato”, hosted in our hotel from March 27th to August 27th 2019.   The Marzadori Collection on display at Ca' Pisani   The works of the exhibition organized at Ca' Pisani are the fruit of thirty years of careful selection by the collector Maurizio Marzadori - founder of Freak Andò. This well-known Bolognese antique dealer, a lover of the twentieth century, has always collected common objects, toys, children's furniture, furnishing accessories, many of which were partly exhibited at the MOMA in New York (2012 in the exhibition “Century of the Child ”), at the Milan Triennale (2017/2018 at the“ Giro giro tondo ”exhibition), at the Archaeological Museum of Bologna (2003), at the Salaborsa Library in Bologna (2014) and in other prestigious museums and exhibitions. The exhibition "Ca' Pisani: il ‘900 ritrovato" retraced some of the main currents of the twentieth century, including Futurism, Déco, Rationalism and Aerodynamics up to the early 1950s. Among the artists on display were Ponti, Gariboldi, Diulgheroff, Mazzotti, Simonetto, Pacetti, Hagenauer, Bevilacqua, Baldelli, Lenci, Tavolara, Cambellotti, Bonazzi, "Cirillo" and many others, as well as authentic anonymous masterpieces. The exhibition itinerary began on the ground floor, in the reception and in the small sitting room, with suggestive twentieth-century rocking horses, then continued onto the first floor with common objects and finally on up to the second floor with Futurist toys and furnishings. The exposition aroused great interest from the public and was visited by more than 1700 people. The section of common objects was purchased in full by the Serandrei family to allow them to be a permanent part of the hotel experience, 20th-century treasures that perfectly blend in the setting of the Deco Design Hotel.   The twentieth century in every room In each of our 29 rooms you will find one of the twentieth century works acquired by the family. These are everyday objects: cups, trays, glasses, statuettes, objects and more. Each one has been placed in the silver Art Deco console in your room and is accompanied by a small caption of explanation. Some pieces are characterized by originality, others have particular colors and shapes. You can come across, for example, a skier from the 30s in a coffee service from the 40s whose cups resemble boats made with leaves, or you will be delighted by the bright colors of some ceramic services in many varying shapes, or you can still admire an extraordinary 1940s watch. Choose your experience and you will find out on your arrival which object you will find in your room. This shows the love for art and attention to every single detail that has guided the hospitality philosophy of the Serandrei family since 1908 and that in the Ca' Pisani Deco Design Hotel has found its ideal location.

The Carnival of Venice is one of the best known and most appreciated events in the world. Every year, during this period, the city comes alive with masks, confetti, frittelle and galani (Carnival sweets), parties and events. This celebration has always attracted citizens and tourists to the historic center and is tinged with even more mystery and fun thanks to the traditions of the Venetian capital and its characteristics: a unique city built on the water, a labyrinth of narrow streets which open in “campi” and small squares that act as a stage for various activities. But do you know what is the origin of the Venice Carnival and what are the events not to be missed? Here below we are giving you a taste of it.   The origins of the Venice Carnival   The Venice Carnival has very ancient origins. There is a first written trace of it in an edict of Doge Vitale Falier of 1094 about entertainment and celebrations in the days preceding Lent, but it was officially named public holiday in 1296 by the Senate of the Serenissima Republic. The Carnival probably has a much older tradition and served as a way to give the population free play, a period in which social classes leveled off and irony on authority and aristocracy was allowed. By wearing a mask, people could transform themselves into what they wanted, thus canceling their belonging to a specific social class, religion, sex etc. In the 18th century the Carnival of Venice reached its maximum splendor, acquiring fame throughout Europe; the love adventures of one of the most famous characters in the world, Giacomo Casanova, date back exactly to this period. The Carnival originally began on December 26th, although some celebrations started in October, and lasted until the day before Lent. Today, however, events and shows are concentrated in the ten days preceding the Ash Wednesday.   The main events of the Venice Carnival   Each year the Venice Carnival focuses on a specific theme that becomes a common thread of all the events of the period and involves not only the historic center, but also the entire province. Boats, dances, water games and much more made this event truly scenic and engaging. The access can be limited: the show is therefore offered at various times and days to allow more people to participate.   Volo dell’Angelo (Flight of the Angel)   The celebrations in Saint Mark’s Square, the symbolic place of the Venice Carnival, open with the flight of the Angel: a costumed character descends "flying" from the top of the bell tower of Saint Mark’s to a stage where the Doge and the other masks in traditional costumes wait for her. According to the tradition, the person who acts the part of the angel is the winning Mary of the previous edition of the Carnival.   Volo dell’Aquila (Flight of the Eagle)   The flight of the eagle is the second descent from the top of the bell tower to Saint Mark's square, scheduled for the week following the Flight of the Angel. In this case, a prominent figure in current affairs, sports, entrepreneurship, music or entertainment is involved.   La festa delle Marie (The feast of the Marys)   The beauty contest that takes place during the Venice Carnival is named “Festa delle Marie”. Every year, usually on the first Saturday of the Carnival, twelve Venetian girls (selected in the previous weeks) are presented to the city via a fancy dress procession that winds from the church of San Pietro di Castello through via Garibaldi and Riva degli Schiavoni, to Saint Mark’s Square. This event recalls the homage the Doge used to offer to twelve beautiful Venetian girls by giving them jewels for their wedding.   Giovedì grasso (Fat Thursday)   It takes place on the last Thursday before the end of the Carnival and it is on this day that many events and parades in Venice and its province are concentrated. In Saint Mark’s Square there is usually the “Ballata delle Maschere con il Taglio della Testa del Toro” (Ballad of the Masks with the Cutting of the Bull's Head). The history says that in 1162 the Doge Vitale Michiel II overcame the patriarch Ulrico of Aquileia accompanied by 12 rebel feudal lords. As a tribute and compensation for this victory, the successors of the Venetian bishop had to offer the Doge a bull, 12 loaves and 12 pigs each year, an evident allegory of what happened, and all this ended with the cutting of the bull's head.   Martedì grasso (Shrove Tuesday)   The day before the Ash Wednesday, the Venice Carnival officially closes. The last flight from the bell tower of Saint Mark’s, called the "svolo del Leon" in Venetian dialect (the flight of the lion), celebrates the symbol of the city. The twelve Marys are waiting for him on stage: on this occasion the winner of the beauty competition is also presented, to end with beauty from every point of view!

A new year has just begun and we sincerely hope that it will bring serenity and health to everyone. Even if the future is a huge question mark at the moment, we are sure we will not stop traveling; of course we can't do it physically yet, but for sure we can go on exciting tours thanks to our imagination and the testimonies of friends and acquaintances. We therefore propose here an itinerary to discover the main festivities of the Venice lagoon, a year-long journey. Many are intertwined with the history of the Serenissima Republic, others are connected to some religious events: let's discover them together. Traditional Venetian Events- not to be missed!   Carnevale di Venezia (Venice Carnival)   After Christmas holidays, the Venetians eagerly await the Carnevale. For two weeks the city comes alive with masks and events that take place in the various districts. The main events such as the Flight of the Angel and the Eagle and the Festa delle Marie are held in Saint Mark’s Square. (again, I would use Italian names, San Marco, here as you already use Feste delle Marie which is Italian.) Unfortunately, due to the reasons we all know, in 2021 the program has been revised to avoid gatherings; but pastry shops and bars are already offering the typical desserts of the period: frittelle and galani!   Festa di San Marco (Feast of Saint Mark)   On April 25th the city of Venice; in addition to celebrating Liberation Day, which occurs throughout Italy; also celebrates its patron saint, San Marco. (Saint Mark) On this day Venetians give their loved ones a rosebud, in Venetian called bocolo.   Festa della Sensa (Feast of the Ascension)   In May, the Festa della Sensa is celebrated – in Venetian it means the day of Christ’s Ascension, and the Festa is related to the history of the Serenissima. Also known as the Marriage with the Sea, it offers a spectacular water procession of traditional rowing boats from Saint Mark’s basin to the Lido of Venice island with the launch of a ring in the water.   Festa del Redentore (Redentore Festivity)   One of the favorite events of Venetians, is the Redentore Festivity which takes place on the Saturday before the third Sunday in July; commemorating the end of a terrible plague (1577) which culminated in the construction of the famous Palladian basilica on the island of Giudecca, as a votive offering. Today Venetians make a pilgrimage to the Redentore church walking across the Giudecca Canal on a bridge made of floating boats. On Saturday evening an exciting fireworks display occurs in Saint Mark’s Basin, which is viewed from boats, along the banks of the canal and also can be admired from the panoramic terraces or from the characteristic rooftop terraces of Venetian palaces.   Regata storica (Historical Regatta)   On the first Sunday of September, you can breathe the ancient atmosphere of the Venetian maritime republic and the lagoon rowing tradition. The Historical Regatta, the main appointment of the Venetian rowing competitions, offers a splendid water parade with typical boats and figures in costume, which is followed by various competitions along the Grand Canal. It is a unique show in the world.   Madonna della Salute   On November 21st, Venice celebrates the Feast of the Madonna della Salute which commemorates the votive offering of the entire city to the Madonna for the end of a terrible plague between 1630 and 1631. To facilitate the pilgrimage to the Basilica, a temporary floating bridge over boats is built on the Grand Canal and along the calli there are candle dealers selling offerings to the Madonna, as well as sweets of all kinds. According to the tradition on this day you should eat a typical dish: the castradina made with mutton and cabbage.

Venice is a city rich in history, art and tradition. You can get lost in its calli and campielli in search of architectural details, historical references or even its magnificent views. You can visit the most renowned museums or discover the most sought-after art galleries. We also recommend you to take the time to discover its culinary traditions: a journey rich in unique flavours where you will taste the cuisine so loved by the Venetians. The influences that have permeated the Venetian capital over the centuries have helped to create a mix of unique flavours throughout the world, which satisfy even the most demanding palates. Of course, fish is king. In bacari (the typical Venetian taverns) as well as in the most renowned restaurants you will find many dishes with cod, cuttlefish, sea bass, sea bream and all other native species. In our magazine’s first date with Venetian cuisine, we have decided to share the secret of a simple, but also, tasty recipe which can be made for a Christmas celebration or on any occasion and will be much appreciated by your guests.   Schie: the typical shrimp of the lagoon   Schia is a term that in the Venetian dialect denotes a small person and for this reason is used as the name of the typical lagoon shrimp, which measures on average from 3 to 5cms (sometimes up to 9 cm.) It has a greyish colour and is found in the lagoon between Venice and Trieste especially during the winter months. According to our culinary tradition, schie are served in various ways, but one of the most famous is certainly polenta with schie.   Polenta and schie: the recipe   We asked the help of our Chef for this quick and easy recipe that you can try to reproduce at home: enjoy!   Ingredients for 4 people   500 g of schie 400 g of soft polenta Extra virgin olive oil 100 ml Garlic (1 clove) Brandy 10 ml Salt and Pepper to taste. Parsley 2 liters of water 200 gr corn flour 30 gr butter   Method   For the soft polenta: Bring a litre of water to the boil, add the salt and the polenta. Cook over a low heat for a few minutes, stirring continuously. Meanwhile, boil the remaining litre of water and, when the polenta has absorbed all the cooking water, add a ladle of boiling water and continue stirring, as you would for risotto, for about 30 minutes. Finally, stir in a knob of butter and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. For the schie: While the polenta is cooking, wash and blanch the schie in water and lemon for 2 minutes, once cool, peel them one by one: given their small size it will take a lot of patience, but it will be worth it. In a non-stick pan, heat the extra virgin olive oil with the crushed garlic and chopped parsley, then add the schie and simmer for one minute with a drop of brandy. Once cooked, add salt and pepper and serve by placing the schie on the soft polenta. Buon Appetito!

We are pleased to share, with you, Ca’ Pisani’s important milestone: on November 30th we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its opening, in a year that has been, is, and unfortunately will be, a quite difficult year for everyone. That is why we take advantage of this opportunity to bring a wave of optimism and positivity: happy 20th birthday Ca' Pisani!   The opening of Ca' Pisani   Our hotel was born from an idea of Ugo Serandrei, father of the current owners. Already at the helm of the Hotel Saturnia & International in Venice located in San Marco, managed by the Serandrei family since 1908, Ugo was also a lover of art and in particular of Futurism. The search for an original place for the exhibition of some of Depero's works led him to plan a new concept of hotel that differed from the Venetian hotel scene of the time. With the support and collaboration of architects, designers and collectors, the first design hotel in Venice was born.   The boutique hotel according to Ugo Serandrei   Ugo Serandrei had conceived the Ca' Pisani as a boutique hotel: where if a guest had appreciated a collectable piece seen in his/her room or in the common areas, it was possible to buy it. And this actually happened. Marianna still remembers a Russian client so in love with the briarwood bed in which she had slept, that she decided to get it and had it shipped to Russia. Later this concept weakened, partly due to the unique value of the pieces that furnish the Ca' Pisani and partly because of the emotional bond that Ugo's children now feel towards this little Art Deco jewel. To the point that last year they purchased a collection of 20th century objects from an antiquarian in Bologna: after being exhibited at the Ca' Pisani, the objects have become an integral part of the furniture of the rooms of the hotel.   20 years together   On November 30th 2000, the doors of Ca 'Pisani Hotel in Venice opened to the public for the first time. The aim was to offer guests a unique experience, both for the concept (ours has been the first design hotel in Venice) and for our customer service: we do our best to make every guest feel at home, and pamper him/her paying attention to even the smallest details because they really make a difference. Today these principles still guide our work. We had hoped to celebrate our twentieth anniversary in a different way, but the events of this 2020 have changed everyone's life. However, we believe in optimism: #staysafe and happy birthday Ca' Pisani!

We invested a lot in the past months to offer our guests an unforgettable experience with maximum safety and all the staff did their best to respect the new procedures, always with a smile (even if hidden by the mask) and for this I am very grateful to all of them. Speed, becoming and movement in space are the main cornerstones of Futurism, a current born in Italy at the beginning of the twentieth century that has involved all the arts, from painting to sculpture, from literature to music, and then spread also in the lifestyle of its enthusiasts. In cooking, for example, the Futurists rejected the recipes and terms traditionally used in this field, and created polybibites (which are nowadays called cocktails) such as Inventina, and formulas (substitute term for recipe) with really bizarre names (divorced eggs, drunk calf, likeacloud, etc.). You can taste some of them in our La Rivista Restaurant and you will find others in the 2020 and 2023 calendars of the Serandrei family, a tradition that has been handed on since 1981.   Depero at Ca' Pisani   Futurism was one of the reasons behind the foundation of the Ca' Pisani Hotel: Ugo Serandrei, 4th generation hotelier and father of the current owners, had bought authentic Depero’s artworks and, looking for an original and not obvious place for their exhibition, conceived a particular hotel different from the Venetian hotel scene of that time. Thus the first design hotel in Venice, with the help of architects, designers and collectors, was born. You can admire the original works of art by Fortunato Depero upon check-in, during breakfast and on your way to the room. In the reception hall you can admire "Listen - Stop - Look" (1930), tempera and Indian ink on paper. When having breakfast, the eye will be enraptured by the bright colors of "La Rivista" (1925), the work the restaurant takes its name from. The color continues to amaze even in the second piece on display in this room, the collage of cards “Portatore – Tazza” (1929/1931). Finally, the artwork "Dalla serie Balli Plastici" (1925) hangs on the main staircase leading to the first floor.   Futurism on display at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection   Futurism was a movement of total change that broke with the past and so important that even the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, one of the most prestigious European and American art museums of the twentieth century in Italy, dedicates a special section to it. From our hotel you can quickly reach this extraordinary gallery (just 4 minutes on foot) to continue your stay dictated by art. You will come across Giacomo Balla's oil on panel (1871 - 1958) "Velocità astratta + rumore" (1913-14). Here the artist studies the impact of the speed of a car in the natural environment, also representing its noise, as onomatopoeia plays a great role (which is the reason why you can find these sounds on our website). To highlight how the pictorial reality expands into outer space, the brushstrokes come out of the canvas and involve the frame. “Mare = Ballerina” by Gino Severini (1883 - 1966), which is from the same year, is inspired by the sea of Anzio and represents the fusion between a ballerina's dress and the waves of the sea with brushstrokes of colors deriving from Neo-Impressionism. Also in this case the force of the sea is so disruptive as to involve the frame. You will have the chance to admire the sculpture “Dinamismo di un cavallo in corsa + case” (1915) by Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916). The artist uses different materials and blends the piece of art with the surrounding environment: horse and house are visually imperceptible and create a new entity. Other futurist masterpieces are present in the archives and have been shown in various temporary exhibitions in the past. We hope they can also be the subject of future events because the richness of the Guggenheim Collection and the originality of Futurism create a really valuable combination for every art lover.

Venice is a city rich in art and history but there is a district (which venetians call "Sestiere") that contains the artistic and university heart of the city: Dorsoduro. Unlike the neighboring Sestiere di San Marco, the calli and campielli of Dorsoduro are less crowded and hide unforgettable views of an authentic Venice. You will find some of the most important art museums in the city and you can plan your itinerary in the name of local crafts and food and wine.   What to visit in Dorsoduro   Basilica della Salute It is one of the most important Baroque churches in Venice. It is located in the Punta della Dogana area and is the backdrop for many photographs taken from the Accademia Bridge. Designed by Baldassarre Longhena, of Palladian inspiration, this basilica is the arrival point of a pilgrimage that takes place every year on November 21st on the occasion of the Feast of the Madonna della Salute, an ancient Venetian tradition, which commemorates the thanksgiving of the entire city to the Madonna for the end of a terrible pestilence between 1630-31.   Zattere The Fondamenta delle Zattere overlooks the Giudecca Canal and connects the Maritime Station to Punta della Dogana, a path of almost one kilometer. It is the ideal place to stroll and enjoy the view. A mandatory stop especially for the sweet lovers is “da Nico” ice cream parlor which with its now famous gianduiotto will brighten your day even more.   Campo Santa Margherita The hub of the neighborhood's social life, Campo Santa Margherita comes alive during aperitif hours, thanks , above all, to the proximity of some of the IUAV and Ca 'Foscari university location. Going along it towards the Accademia it is possible to cross the famous Ponte dei Pugni and admire the characteristic fruit and vegetable shop-boat.   Museums and galleries Dorsoduro is home to some museums that art lovers should visit. Here are the main ones: Gallerie dell’Accademia with works by Venetian and Italian artists including Giorgione, Carpaccio, Veronese and many others; The Peggy Guggenheim Collection where you can admire the masterpieces of contemporary art (Duchamp, Kandinsky, Picasso just to name a few); Punta della Dogana with the Pinault Collection, home to various temporary exhibitions; Ca' Rezzonico, the eighteenth-century Venetian museum housed in a splendid Baroque palace; Palazzo Cini with its works of ancient art (including Filippo Lippi, Beato Angelico, Botticelli, Piero di Cosimo, Pontormo); Casa dei Tre Oci, famous for its photographic exhibitions; V-A-C Foundation, recently opened gallery and home to various temporary exhibitions.   Squero di San Trovaso The squero di San Trovaso, housed in a wooden structure with the typical shape of a mountain house, is one of the oldest traditional shipyards in the city still active. Operating since the 17th century, gondolas, pupparini, sandoli, sciopòni and other boats typical of the Venetian lagoon tradition are still built here today.   Craft shops Ca' Macana with its masks, Perlamadredesign and its creations with pearls, Canestrelli mirrors and Dal Nono Colussi focaccia are just some of the shops that carry on local craftsmanship between tradition and innovation. Lose yourself in the streets of Dorsoduro and discover the shops of the past, exchange a few words with the owners and you will discover the most authentic Venice.   Cicheti and more: where to eat Visiting Venice also means savoring its traditional dishes such as cod, saor or cuttlefish. Of course there are also typical recipes based on meat and vegetarian reinterpretations to satisfy everyone's tastes.
